Fertilization Practices Of Durian Trees
The experience of Mr Lai has proven that proper management is essential in order to achieve high yield of production. As an oil palm saplings planter, he realized that durian planting is different from oil palm planting where the outcome of oil palm depends solely on the adequacy of labour work, whereas the growth of durian trees could be easily affected, or eventually lead to tree death even just by a very small mistake in management.

As an oil palm saplings planter, he realized that durian planting is different from oil palm planting where the outcome of oil palm depends solely on the adequacy of labour work, whereas the growth of durian trees could be easily affected, or eventually lead to tree death even just by a very small mistake in management.
Under the proper care of Mr Lai, the 3-years-old saplings have finally initiated buds. Although the growth rate of durian saplings was somehow quite ideal, Mr Lai found out that part of the durian saplings were attacked by serious Canker disease especially infections at the roots. Hence, he decided to give injection at the tree trunk because this is the most effective way of treatment and prevention. On top of that, he practices spraying pesticides once every 15 days since the saplings are the most vulnerable to being attacked by pests.
Use wrong fertilizers will affect tree growth
According to Mr Lai, the care and maintenance of saplings is relatively different from that of old trees, especially have to be extra mindful with fertilization to avoid using wrong fertilizers which might retard the sapling growth or even cause death.
In view of this, he selected the series products of Agrobridge (M) Sdn Bhd in order to boost the growth of tree trunk, tree leaves as well as formation of durian fruits.
Mr Lai usually uses AgroBridge chloride free fertiliser like Complex Green Special 15-15-15-5Cao-6S. This fertiliser is safe to use on chloride sensitive crop like durian. The dosage for 1.5 years old and 3.5 years old saplings are 400g and 1kg. Other than that, he also using BONICA and Champion organic 555. The Champion organic 555 consists of of over 50% organic matters such as soy, cane, fish bone, humic acid and beneficial microorganisms to restore soil structure, increase organic matters as well as promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the soil. The use of Complex Green Special can be combined with either Bonica or Champion and interchange between these two fertilizers during monthly fertilization.
On top of that, Mr Lai also uses foliar fertilizer,WUXAL Ascofol Zn. The seaweed extract ingredient consists of natural stimulants, zinc elements which function to prevent plant infections as well as resist environmental stress. The preparation is by diluting 1.0-1.5L fertiliser in 1000L of water, whereas the usage frequency is once every two weeks.
Under Mr Lai’s proper cares and mindful fertilization plan, the overall durian saplings growth is considerably ideal, hence inadvertently attract the surrounding farmers to consult saplings management from him.
