About seven years ago, Thomas Yong who worked in the field of Cooling Tower construction bought a 3-acres durian orchard in Karak, Pahang. In the beginning, he was not able to spare enough time to manage the plantation due to his busy careers. Because of this, he had contracted his orchard to 2-3 teams of contractors within 5 years, up until about two years ago he finally withdrew the orchard’s ownership and managed on his own.

The age of the trees in his orchard is typically 30-40 years, while the varieties are D2, D24, 101, Musang King, Monthong and others. The reason of him decided to withdraw the orchard’s ownership is mainly because most of the plants were weak and constantly sick due to neglect of maintenance by previous contractors, some of the plants even stressed out by over-production. Hence, after Thomas took back the orchard’s ownership, he focused on replenishing sufficient nutrients to the plants.

In fact, although Thomas did not have any durian planting experience, after he tried out the products of Agrobridge (M) Sdn Bhd as well as followed the instructions of company technician Mr Alwyn, his plants finally started growing strong and even bore fruits. Thomas is satisfied with the quality of imported fertilizers where the formula covers both granular fertilizers and foliar fertilizers such as Complex Green Special, Complex Blue Special, Purple Special, Innotec K etc. The fertilizers are typically applied once per fortnight where each plant only needs 1.5-2.0 kilogram fertilizers.

Worried if durian fruits are too heavy

As for foliar fertilizers, Thomas is especially satisfied with the formula of WUXAL Fulvic fertilizer because it can promote the growth of new leaves as well as enhance the process of photosynthesis. Under these circumstances, the durian production is boosted by 2-3 times compared to usual production. Among various foliar fertilizers of Agrobridge (M) Sdn Bhd, Thomas usually selects Microplant, Boron and Calcium fertilizers for use during flowering season to enhance fruit quality. On top of that, he applies Ascofol fertilizer during dry weather to boost plants’ resistance towards dry season. During fruiting period, Thomas will use K40 fertilizer to increase the weight of fruits. The preparation method of all the above WUXAL foliar fertilisers is by diluting 30mL with 20L water.

However, Thomas will on hold the application of K40 fertilizer if the durian trees grow too high because fruits which are too heavy might break the tree branches, needless to say if falling from such a height even hanging net could not avoid the fruits from falling to the ground. In fact, Thomas prefers each durian fruit weighs below 2 kilograms, this is because firstly those fruits below 2 kilograms tend to ripen easily; secondly the correspond price for fruits weighed below 2 kilogram is comparatively more affordable to most of the consumers, hence they are always the all-time-favorites among the consumers.
